What observations have you made on the changes over the years in photographic

a) style and b) technique?

I believe there is a more candid and relaxed approach to the wedding photography. More people want an unobtrusive style because it allows them to enjoy the day and the photographer to capture the moment. Around six years ago wedding photography was more staged and stagnate in poses.

Photography technique has changed with the introduction of digital photography. With digital anything that can be imagined is possible. Closed eyes can be reopened, relatives can be removed from photos ( this has been requested ) and digital layouts are more popular in wedding albums.

What advantages do the new style have over the old, and/if vice versa?

The advantage of capturing a wedding in a candid style is that the true essence of the wedding can be brought out. People are less aware of the camera and can be more themselves. Not many people today want stiff poses with cheesy smiles.

The disadvantage of shooting a candid wedding is that they are hard to shoot. The photographer must be constantly ready to capture every moment and not be afraid to shoot through the film in order to achieve the perfect shots. It takes a well trained photographer to pull off a completely candid wedding.

The disadvantage with digital photography is that many people can get caught up in the aesthetic layout of the digital image. The frills and effects can overtake the essence behind the images. I believe that digital can be a cover up for bad or boring photos. When choosing a photographer it is important to look at the photos and not the effects around them.

What is your favorite period of wedding photography (could be for comedy or nostalgic reasons)?

I am enjoying my favorite photography period now, the candid and natural approach. Photos become spontaneous and the wedding story unfolds naturally by itself. I allow people to do what they enjoy doing and capture it as an artwork. When you like your style of photography people feed off this energy and get into the day & not just go through the motions of their wedding.
